Crown Wins Marie Claire Sustainability Award

A Milestone in Eco-Friendly Decorating

We’re thrilled to announce that Crown has been honoured with the Marie Claire Sustainability Award 2024 for Eco-Friendly Decorating Brand of the Year! This exciting achievement highlights our unwavering commitment to sustainable practices and positions us as a leader in eco-conscious decorating solutions.

As part of the Hempel Group, Crown has always been dedicated to shaping a brighter future. Our comprehensive approach to sustainability spans the entire product lifecycle—from formulation and manufacturing to packaging, design, and logistics. This commitment has not only earned us recognition but has also set a new benchmark for the industry.

We were the first UK paint manufacturer to introduce paint cans made from 100% recycled plastic, setting a new standard in packaging. Our Walls & Ceilings range is certified vegan, and our Trim and Easyclean ranges are 99% solvent-free, contributing to healthier indoor air quality. Additionally, we’ve introduced fully recyclable paint swatch samples made from entirely recycled materials. These initiatives underscore our commitment to sustainability and our drive to innovate in eco-friendly solutions.

When it comes to the past year alone, we have celebrated some significant milestones:

  • Renewable Energy: 100% of our owned operations now run on renewable energy from certified sources.
  • Can Recycling: We’ve recycled over 1.3 million paint cans through our Can Back scheme.
  • Community Donations: Unused paint is repurposed and donated to community groups.
  • Innovative Products: The launch of Crown Trade Clean Air, a paint that meets BREEAM and LEED requirements and purifies indoor air, exemplifies our dedication to both quality and sustainability.

Looking ahead

While our journey towards sustainability has been remarkably successful, it is a continual process that is far from over. In 2023, we launched Project Possible, an ambitious ESG strategy aimed at making a positive impact on people and the planet.

Some of the goals we have set for ourselves over the coming years include:

  • Carbon Neutrality and Emissions Reduction: We aim to achieve complete carbon neutrality across our operations by 2026 and reduce greenhouse gas emissions across our supply chain by 50% by 2030.
  • Zero Waste to Landfill: We are on track to become a zero waste to landfill business by 2026.
  • Recycled Packaging: By 2025, all our plastic packaging will contain 80% recycled content, surpassing the UK Plastic Packaging Tax threshold.

We are delighted to have been recognised by Marie Claire as Eco-Friendly Decorating Brand of the Year and we look forward to continuing our hard work. Our Director Katie McLean, says it best: “Sustainability isn't just a buzzword for us, it's at the heart of everything we do,” says our Director Katie McLean, “This award is a recognition of our commitment to people and our planet without compromising on product quality. It’s fantastic to see this recognised by Marie Claire. Our goals might be ambitious, but they are not unattainable, and by setting the standard, we hope to inspire not only our industry but also our customers to embrace more sustainable choices so we can paint a better world for future generations.”

Thank you for celebrating this milestone with us and for your continued support in promoting sustainability!
